21 Methods for Detoxing Everyday (that are backed by science)

I'm all fired up (again) for detoxing. As I compiled this list it only reminded that detoxing doesn't have to be arduous or super expensive.

Get this - The National Institutes of Health has come out and said that exposure to environmental carcinogens are estimated to be responsible for 75-80% of cancer diagnosis and death in the US.

Wow! Even I was shocked by this. So it's been proven that most of the time, it is NOT our DNA that dictates disease, but rather what environment that DNA is exposed to.

Things like processed foods, synthetic preservatives, artificial hormones, injected antibiotics, impure water with fluoride and chlorine all cause major issues. This is why cleansing is so important today.


Detoxing just means removing the typical burdens, chemicals and substances that overload the body with extra work and damage to clean up. I like to call it "de-deflaming" as in reducing overall inflammation in the body, which when chronic, sets the stage for virtually all disease.

A cleanse program helps the body by: 

  • Allowing the organs to rest and reset
  • Improving circulation of the blood and elimination through lymphatics
  • Rejuvenating the whole body with much needed and often lacking nutrients
  • Reduces widespread inflammation with a highly anti-inflammatory diet and process

It may be time to detox if you experience: 

  • Periodic constipation or diarrhea
  • Skin issues or sensitivities (acne, rashes, hives, psoriasis)
  • Frequent infections (flu, colds, UTI's, yeast infections)
  • Bloating after eating
  • Difficulty losing weight even when trying
  • Unexplained anxiety or depression
  • Mood swings
  • Hormonal imbalance or menstrual issues
  • Unexplained fatigue or low energy

Now here are my top 21 ways to detox that are simple and easy (most very cheap). Incorporate one or more of these into your daily routine and watch your health transform. 

#1 Oil Pulling

Someone once said that the state of a person's health can be seen in his mouth.

This technique works by cleansing the mouth as it pulls out the microbes, toxic by-products of those microbes and creates a clean oral environment that prevents cavities, often reverses cavities and even prevents disease (1).

Oil pulling not only helps tooth health, breath, whiten teeth but it also boosts the immune system, prevents inflammation, reduces risk of heart disease and can be super helpful during sick times.

Oil Pulling Method:

  1. Gently swish 1–2 tablespoons of coconut oil in the mouth and between teeth for 15–20 minutes. Don't swallow any of the oil.
  2. Spit out the oil in the trash. Don't spit in sink. Rinse mouth with warm water or you can use salt water for more antimicrobial properties.
  3. Brush teeth as you normally would.

Added Tips: Do this 3-4 times per week and do it in the morning before eating anything. You can also try it before bed before you brush your teeth.

#2 Activated Charcoal

For 10,000 years, activated charcoal has been used to soak up poisons and improve intestinal health through a process called adsorption which means “to bind to."

Currently it's used in emergency rooms as an antidote for poisoning and drug overdoses. In addition to that, activated charcoal is a stellar remedy for body detoxification, digestion disturbances, anti-aging and even heart health. (2)

It's best taken in the form of capsules or powder. Take it between meals and 90 min to 2 hours before or after using any other supplements AND medications, as it can interfere with the absorption of those into the body.

Look for activated charcoal made from coconut shells or wood species that have ultra-fine grains. When in powder form, sometimes companies will add artificial sweeteners, be sure to avoid those.

Take 2 capsules or 1-2 tsp of activated charcoal powder.

Take Activated Charcoal When:

  • You eat low quality foods
  • You want to lower cholesterol. (3)
  • Drinking alcohol to prevent hangovers or to help a hangover. (4)
  • You suddenly feel irritable, moody or tired
  • You want to whiten teeth, apply to teeth
  • You're pregnant to bind toxins
  • You're jet lagged
  • You're trying to do a full body detox
  • You have acne, topically apply to face

Additional Tips: When you take activated charcoal, drink 12-16 glasses of water per day. Activated charcoal can cause dehydration otherwise. It will stain your poop black, so don't be alarmed.

#3 Epsom Salt Bath

Epsom salts contain magnesium and other minerals that can be absorbed through the skin. This absorption can help the colon push things out, especially if they are backed up and reabsorbing toxins into the bloodstream.

So you may find that you may need to use the bathroom after your bath time!

Epsom Salt Method:

  1. Pour 2-3 cups of Epsom salts into warm bath water. You can also include several drops of an essential oil such as lavender, rosemary or eucalyptus.
  2. Sit back and relax for about 20 minutes.
  3. Pat dry off and you can even finish off with a nice lather of some coconut oil for moisturizer.

Now there's only one notable study done on the effectiveness of Epsom salt baths. But even without overwhelming scientific support, the mere relaxation effects and cleansing of the epidermis is itself worth this technique.

#4 Green Smoothies

When you get a very nutritious green smoothie in, you prep your body to handle blood sugar variations very smoothly. This is because your smoothie is packed with fiber which is known to slow the spike of sugar.

It's that sugar yo-yo that can leave you feeling moody, low energy and yucky. Soluble fiber bulks up the thickness of the intestines after you eat and slows carbohydrate digestion and glucose absorption because of that (5).

If you absorb too much sugar too quickly your pancreas produces extra insulin to help take out the excess glucose from your blood and transports it to your tissues. And, then say hello to fat & toxin storage.

So drink a green smoothie (or 2) every day even if you plan on eating your normal guilty pleasures. I only say this to you (not to encourage bad habits) but to actually encourage that you don't need to eat perfectly to start somewhere.

Make sure you drink a green smoothie with some fresh greens like spinach or kale, some plant based protein (my favorite is hemp), some healthy fats like avocado or coconut, and some added fiber and omegas like chia and flax.

#5 Intermittent Fasting

Oh how this one, it's one of my favorites ways to detox. Intermittent fasting or cyclic fasting, has emerged in the research as having many, many health benefits. However, this isn't a new concept. Just as many other wonderful cures and remedies, it's been used for centuries.

It's been shown to be helpful for losing stubborn weight, improving blood sugar balance, lowering cholesterol and improving heart health, reducing systemic inflammation, protects the brain and memory and decreases the urge to eat. (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)

There's not just one correct method for this type of fast - there are many ways it can be done effectively.

Fasts like:

  • Alternate Fasting - You simply eat solid food every other day. On fast days, you can decide to eat very little solid food, under 500 calories or just drink some green smoothie or juice for that day.
  • 5:2 Diet - Eat normally for 5 days and then choose 2 days out of the week where you fast and eat less than 500 calories on those days.
  • Ketogenic Fasting or Carb Cycling - This is where you eat a low carb, high fat, moderate protein diet on your fasting days. So you can eat normally for 5 days and then choose 2 days where you only eat a ketogenic diet consisting of about 10% carbs, 75% protein, 15% protein.
  • Warrior Diet - You eat only fruits and veggies during the day and then eat one meal at night.
  • 16/8 Diet - You fast for 16 hours (this includes sleep) and then eat solid foods only during an 8 hour window. For example, after dinner you fast until the next day and skip breakfast to total 16 hours of no food.

You can do a fast like this when you have the environment to do it. For example, when you're not going to be surrounded by temptations and going to events.

This allows the digestive tract and organs to get in a full rest, so the body has the chance to reset and rejuvenate without focusing all it's attention on digestion.

#6 Coffee Enema

If you're looking for an interesting and new way to use your coffee on a Saturday morning, then I have just the thing for you ;).  

Studies have shown that coffee enemas are an effective way to to cleanse the lower intestines. Coffee enemas help by pulling out heavy metals, yeast and bacteria from the colon.

This seemingly strange therapy was made famous by the Gerson Institute in the 50s, when it used coffee enemas on cancer patients. Nowadays, many holistic doctors use this technique for constipation, parasites, candida overgrowth in the digestive tract and even for cancer. (12, 13)

Coffee Enema Procedure:

  1. Put 2 tablespoons of non-decaf organic coffee beans in 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil & simmer for 15-20 min.
  2. Strain the coffee beans out, so there's no particles left. Let cool for at least 15 min.
  3. Pour the liquid into an enema bag, making sure you have the valve shut.
  4. Place the bag 2-3 feet higher than you, so the liquid can freely flow down and out once you open the valve. Put a bit of coconut oil on the nozzle as a lubricant.
  5. Lay down on your side near the bag. Gently and slowly insert the nozzle into the rectum about an inch, doesn't need to go that deep. Open the valve so the liquid starts to come out.
  6. Let all the liquid from the bag empty into the colon. Hold the coffee water in the colon for 10-15 min. This is easiest if you've already had a bowel movement before the enema.
  7. Once time is up, go to the toilet and release all the liquid out of your bowels.

Additional tips: Don't perform more than 1 enema/week. Always use lubricant and follow the instructions very carefully.

#7 Colonic Hydrotherapy

An enema is a great do it yourself detox option. But when you want to go farther, like farther up the digestive tract and into the upper intestines, you need a colonic.

Colonic Hydrotherapy involves a gentle inflow and outflow of warm water that helps dissolve accumulated toxic buildup and encourages a natural release.

The intestines become a repository of waste and toxins which really back things up and make it very difficult for the body to properly remove toxins. Then those toxins end up being forced back into the blood stream and affecting the cells.

These are done by professionals. It's typically a completely painless therapy and is very safe when performed by a qualified Registered Colon Hydrotherapist. 

#8 Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy has been used in Japan for several decades for arthritis, but it's pretty new on the scene in the west.

It consists of standing in a small chamber as super cold nitrogen gas is released, making the body ice cold in a couple minutes. Then you're done.

Proponents of this therapy are saying that one 3 minute session can burn up to 800 calories, improve metabolism, relieve anxiety, reduce painful aches and even make you feel happier due to released endorphins.

Research has shown this therapy helpful to the function of multiple sclerosis patients as well as those with rheumatoid arthritis. (14,15)

Just like a colonic, this method requires seeking out a facility and practitioner who offers it. 

#9 Use Top Detoxing Herbs

I'll give you the top 3 herbs I recommend for total detoxing. 

Milk Thistle: This is the #1 herb to support liver detoxification. It's even been proven to help body detox from chemotherapy, radiation and harsh pharmaceuticals. (16)

Take 150 mg twice/day.

Dandelion: You might mistake it for a weed, but I've always been fascinated by these little yellow flowers.

I guess my body knew what I didn't back then. Dandelion has powerful detoxing properties.

The root has been used as a liver detoxifier and both the root and leaves act as a tonic for digestion and flushes out excess fluid from the body. It's also been shown to be an effective treatment for certain types of cancers. (17)

Take 2-3 capsules with each meal.

Turmeric (curcumin): This wondrous herb protects your cells from free-radical damage. Believe it or not, there's been over 6,000 medical trials done on the benefits on turmeric and it's ability to reduce inflammation and support detoxification.(18)

Take 1 to 3 grams per day. One gram of ground turmeric powder = ½ teaspoon.

#10 Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is great at balancing blood sugar, increasing energy, and supporting fat loss.

Acetic acid is one of the magical components in apple cider vinegar which has the ability to destroy the “bad” bacteria and simultaneously support the growth of beneficial bacteria. (19)

In Diabetes Care, researchers found that 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water before a meal, actually lowered the blood sugar level by 6%! (20)

Take 1-2 tablespoons in water and drink 10 minutes before each meal.

#11 Sweat It Out in a Sauna

There's not much else more rejuvenating than a healthy sweat. Sweating helps us release physically and mentally and we feel revived.

It's been shown that sweating in saunas can help reduce levels of heavy metals in the body like nickel, mercury, lead which we all come in contact with daily. (21)

Another research study found that BPA (a toxic chemical) was present in 80% of the sweat of the participants, while finding none in urine. So it's clear that sweat is the best avenue for pushing out this toxin. (22)

Now you may be thinking, well exercise helps me sweat so must be the same thing. However, during aerobic exercise, the heart rate pumps up and vital organs receive less blood flow.

Sauna sweating increases heart rate while also increasing blood flow to the vital organs, allowing toxins to be pushed out of there too.

You can start with 5 min/day and work your way up to 20 min a day.

Additional tips:  Drink 2 to 4 glasses of cool water after each sauna. Don't drink alcohol before or after use of the sauna.

#12 Massage Therapy

Of course massage can help reduce painful muscles, joints and provide stress reduction and general relaxation. It's even been proven helpful to lower blood pressure. (23)

But more than that, it's a wonderful way to help the body push out toxins and improve circulation to do so. Massage is a great way to help facilitate more movement in the lymphatic system and the blood circulation. This is especially important if you're not all too active.

#13 Dry Brushing

Dry brushing helps unclog pores so toxins can more easily be exreted through the skin. Since much of the body’s toxins are released through the skin, this super-large organ needs some TLC.

Dr. Thaik MD, a Harvard trained cardiologist, explains that the skin gets clogged by dead skin cells, pollutants and the cosmetics we use. This then causes the kidneys and liver to work much harder. (24)

Dry brushing unclogs the pores which allows the skin to absorb more nutrients and release toxins easier. You'll need a dry brush with natural bristles and a long handle. You can find them at health food stores or online.

You gently brush your entire body from the feet up, stroking upwards towards the heart, until every inch of your skin has been brushed.

After brushing, you'll take a shower, pat dry and moisturize with coconut oil.

#14 Get Your Vitamins

You must support your body at the cellular level if you want to naturally detox and keep your systems in working order. I'll give you a few of the MUST's for every day life and for supporting your body with detoxing. 

Whole Food Multi-Vitamin: When you're deficient in vital nutrients, it's so difficult for the organs and cells to properly detox as they should. Ideally we want to get these nutrients from food, but nowadays it's almost necessary to supplement. And we need the right kind.

You know, studies have shown that taking a synthetic vitamin can increase the chances for a stroke by 30%. Whole food supplements are completely different. They are made from what the name implies, real whole food.

They contain enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants, trace minerals that work synergistically in the body. My favorite vitamin supplements are Mary Ruth's Liquid Vitamins & Minerals or Pure Synergy Vita Min Herb or Garden of Life Vitamin Code.

Vitamin C: This power vitamin limits the ongoing threat of free radicals by its antioxidant activity. This is crucial because if free radicals go haywire in the body, that sets the state for cancers and chronic disease.

Studies how that high dose vitamin C therapy actually slows the growth and spread of prostate, pancreatic, liver, colon and other types of cancer cells. (25)

Take 3000 mg/day during a detox. The only kind of Vitamin C I supplement with is this product here. 

Chlorella: This green superfood supports healthy hormonal function, helps soothe effects of chemotherapy and radiation, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and is a super agent in detoxification of the body. (26)

Take 4-8 capsules/day.

Raw Reserve Superfood Powder: Just like chlorella this product contains several different green superfoods from land and sea vegetables. Packed full of antioxidants and a super additive to bump up detoxification. Get some here. 

Take 1-2 tablespoons/day.

#15 Neti Pot - Nasal Irrigation

Neti pots are simple devices, typically less than $10, that uses salt water to clean the nasal passages. This helps with sinus congestion, colds, allergies and even snoring.

The neti pot originates in Ayurvedic medicine and the word "neti" actually means "nasal cleansing" in Sanskrit. This process simply does what the body does naturally.

The nasal cavity has microscopic hairs called cilia which help trap dust, toxins, and other particles and push them out in mucus. The neti pot does this very thing.

A 2010 review showed that nasal irrigation improves stuffy noses, allergies and less of a need for allergy medications. (27) Yay for the neti pot!

#16 Lemon Water

First thing in the morning, drink warm lemon water (made from fresh squeezed lemon).

Lemons are great at detoxifying the body, helping digestion, stimulating cell production, stimulate enzyme production in the liver and boost immunity.  
Dr. Frank Lipman explains, “We get dehydrated overnight as the body takes care of its detoxification processes, so it's important to hydrate and replenish first thing.” 
So try this: 
1 cup of filtered warm water (not heated in microwave)
1 fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 teaspoon organic cayenne pepper (optional)
1 teaspoon organic ginger powder (optional)
#17 Bentonite Clay

This type of clay is made of volcanic ash and loaded with essential minerals.

It has tons of benefits and it's not expensive. It helps cleanse the liver and colon, helps balance gut bacteria, improves nutrient absorption and strengthens the immune system. (28)

On the molecular level, it has a negative electrical charge, which means it attracts positively charged toxins. Most toxins are indeed positively charged, so it becomes super effective at drawing them out of the body.

You can take clay internally, rub it on your skin or use it in a foot bath.

For detoxing, drink 1/2 to 1 teaspoon once per day as many days of the week as you'd like. Mix the clay with water in a jar with a lid so you can shake it and it dissolves.

#18 Chelation Therapy

Back when I was very ill, I got tested for heavy metal toxicity and of course I was off the charts in several metals, especially aluminum.

I started chelation therapy and noticed improvement in my heavy metal levels in blood as well as improved symptoms. Chelation therapy is an alternative medicine technique that removes heavy metals and toxins from the body. (29)

You likely have some degree of heavy metal toxicity (as most of us do) especially if you have metal fillings in your teeth, eat a lot of fish and seafood, don't bother about where your food comes from (like china), have been vaccinated or have taken chemotherapy or radiation.

All these can contribute. Chelation therapy uses a synthetic chemical solution called EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), which is injected intravenously. EDTA helps remove those metals and toxins from the body through the kidneys and urine.

Now those treatments are not cheap but when you need it, you need it. You can also get EDTA in capsule form. These are not as effective as direct injection of it, but it is a much cheaper alternative.

#19 Ozone Therapy

The bad ozone is created at the ground level by chemical reactions between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This happens when pollutants chemically react in the presence of sunlight.

This is what "smog" is. But, there's a really great kind of ozone, medical ozone. Ozone produced for medical purposes that is pure and has great healing properties. (30)

Ozone therapy is a great way of introducing high levels of oxygen into the body which then makes it very difficult for fungi, bacteria and yeast to survive.

You can do this ozone therapy in a specific ozone sauna or you can buy ozonated olive oil or make your own. Years ago I bought my own ozonator machine for a few hundred bucks.

Everyday I ozonated my water for detoxing and it was part of the very routine that helped me recover from chronic illness. 

#20 Oxygenate

Ozone therapy loads the body up on oxygen as I discussed above. But a much cheaper alternative if using your natural born lungs.

Oxygen is absolutely necessary to the body's ability to absorb nutrients and flush things out. Breathing exercises allows you to absorb these good things more efficiently AND to push out the bad stuff more easily.

Proper breathing can super-charge your lymphatic system by increasing oxygen levels, and this naturally leads to detoxification of the body. Even though breathing is automatic, most are not fully utilizing this amazing natural detox process. (31)

One of the best cleansing types of breath is "breath of fire." This type of breathing technique gives a quick burst of detoxing oxygen for the body. It's not like long deep breathing, which is also great, but a much faster breath.

This type of rapid breath is also wonderful for reducing stress and anxiety in the moment. Breath of Fire is a rhythmic breath through the nostrils with equal emphasis on the inhale and exhale, no deeper than sniffing.

When done correctly, you will feel you can do it forever. When done incorrectly it feels like hyperventilating. This breath is best taught by video and many instructionals can be found online, such as this great gal here.

#21 Contrast Hydrotherapy

A very cheap way to achieve similar results as cryotherapy as discussed above, is what is known as "contrasting." This method exercises and stimulates the body's tissues by simply alternating between hot and cold water.

I know this is something Tony Robbins talks about doing regularly. The point here is to force your tissues into sudden changes, which jumpstarts metabolic activity and improves circulation.

Better metabolism and improved circulation means better natural detoxification for the body. It's also a great way to bump up your energy and mood.

For a proper contrasting session, you need to do 3 - 6 alternations between heating and cooling.

  • 2 minutes of comfortable heat
  • 1 minute of comfortable cold
  • 2 minutes of hotter heat
  • 1 minute of colder cold
  • 2 minutes of hot as you can handle
  • 1 minute of cold as you can handle.

Now full body contrasting such as switching back and forth between hot tub and pool at your local gym can be done as well and is also beneficial physiologically.
